The design approach centers on “elevation.” In response to flood zone requirements and a desire for increased resilience, all conditioned living spaces from the original main floor have been relocated to a newly constructed second level, which is supported by a series of reinforced CMU piers. This independent floor structure allows the original CMU walls below to perform as breakaway walls, designed to give way under significant storm surge pressure without compromising the integrity of the elevated structure above. The original ground level, now intentionally unconditioned, has been repurposed as a garage and storage space, allowing it to function as a sacrificial layer during future storm events.
