Selecting the perfect arrangement of artwork can be challenging for any space, especially stairwells. I prefer to stick with a theme when it comes to grouping photography or art, and when it comes to stairwells, it's important to highlight focal points, beyond just staggering the images with each step. Stairwells come in all shapes and sizes, so let's determine the type of stairwell we're dealing with: a foyer stair requires more formal, elegant pieces; whereas a basement stair can be less formal in the art selection.
The Basement Stair is the subject for this post, and in our home, it leads you to the Theater, Central Perk Coffee, Gym, and Recreational Area, so the art theme could simply reflect the functionality of one of these spaces. As newlyweds, we still had boxes and boxes of decor from our Winter Wedding, and decided to look through them first to get inspiration for this stair wall. We came across our reception table signs, which were Friends themed and incorporated the episode names by taking the words "The One..." and applying it with funny moments that occurred in our lives. Most people disregard their reception table signs, but we are not most people. Our home proudly displays decor pieces from our wedding because when spend all the money you saved up for this magical day, you want to keep the items beyond the one day; and that's what we did.
Before

The Focal Point
Most basement stairs come with a wall sconce to light the stair. We took advantage of our sconce by letting it showcase the key art element for this space: A Floor Plan of the Friends Apartments printed on Canvas. From here, all of the wooden table signs and accessory photos would branch off and stagger down with the descending staircase.

the Yellow Picture Frame
The basement stairwell was slowly emphasizing the show, Friends, so why wouldn't we display the infamous picture frame from the show on this wall? We purchased two frames off Amazon and used them to locate the light switches for this space.

In case you were wondering how the signs were crafted, Hobby Lobby sells blank signs for relatively cheap. We simply bought the number we needed based on our reception table count, and with the help of a family relative and her Cricut Machine, crafted the lettering out of vinyl.
the Order of the Episodes
As you may have guessed, the arrangement of the signs was based on the episode numbering, so as you descended down the stairs, the episode numbers increased, and so did the memories the signage represented.
