I love an Accent Wall. Every room in your home should have an artfully thought-out, well appointed wall, whether it's the main focal point of the space (like a bed wall), or a side wall that compliments the overall theme of the space. For the purpose of this post, we will be focusing on the side wall, and not just any side wall, but the side wall in our kitchen. You know, the space that defines the heart of the home.

In my kitchen, the color of my base cabinets are a bold, dress blues, while the upper cabinets are a simple, low-key white. The cabinet hardware is a beautiful champagne bronze that compliments the cabinet coloring. With this level of boldness, I still had a wall that needed some love. It's the wall that's neither white nor blue, but it's also a wall that everyone gathers near because our kitchen island happens to be situated in front of this wall. After several attempts of hanging wall art, I realized no art or photography in my collection would best serve this wall due to the conflicting colors within the imagery. So, I thought to myself, what could be minimal, reflect our sense of style, but also compliment the colors in our kitchen?

And then it hit me, wall lettering. Now, you will never see the words "Live, Laugh, Love" in our home. While I agree that everyone should live, laugh, and love, I despise the phrase as I feel it's too readily available. So, our first tip when choosing wall lettering is:

Choose a Word or Phrase that has Special Meaning to You and No One Else.

For Patrick & Myself, we love to quote tv shows and movies in our daily conversations. And we knew the accent wall in our kitchen should reflect one of these key phrases. But, which one? There are so many! Keep in mind, this phrase will be "permanently" mounted to the wall, so it has to be something you won't get tired of after months or years of seeing it. It wasn't until we were making our playlist for the wedding and choosing songs based on our favorite tv shows and movies that we came up with the idea.

Let's find a song that is special to both of us.

And there it was, "The Best" by Tina Turner. We fell in love with this song while watching one of our favorite shows, "Schitt's Creek", and if I couldn't get the Jazzagals to perform it at our wedding, I wanted the name of the song mounted on our kitchen wall. And although the song is named "The Best", which was a rude awakening during a Schitt's Creek-themed trivia night, we loved the chorus line,

Simply the Best

Now, I'm a supporter of independent makers that have a specialized craft, so when in doubt, I check out Etsy. For this particular wall lettering, I searched "mid century modern wall lettering" and found the shop owner that had the type of font I was searching for. And the best part about Etsy, I worked with the shop owner to choose the coloring (Gold and Blue to compliment our kitchen colors) and font size. Within a matter of weeks, I had my lettering, and simply needed double sided tape and an Xacto knife to cut the pieces of tape to fit the lettering. Each lettering required around 2-3 pieces of tape.

Simply arrange and space the letters to your liking, and you're done! No drilling necessary.
